      During the past 20 years there has been a general rise in chloride levels in wells resulting from salt being used for road de-icing. These illnesses are frequently caused by bacteria, viruses and protozoa that make their way into the water supply. The Potomac River in Maryland is a water source for several neighboring jurisdictions. The largest ground-water withdrawals for public supply, however, are in Anne Arundel County.

      This will assist MDE to make sound management decisions and appropriately evaluate water withdrawal requests. In these areas, demands for large quantities of freshwater are most readily met by surface-water sources. The reservoirs and rivers in these Counties are used by public suppliers to meet water demands of the Baltimore City and Washington, D.
